Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and obesity are thyroid gland imbalance diseases found in dogs. They can create a great lot of problem for the pet. This disease happens due to malfunctioning of the gland and physical signs of dysfunction.
How does Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and obesity happen?
Thyroxine and Triiodothyronin are two main hormones that are excreted by thyroid gland. They enter the body cells and regulate metabolism. If there is too less amount of either or both hormones, there are chances to develop hypothyroidism, which is a state of low metabolism with consequent impatience to cold, apathy, fatigue, poor arrangement of red blood cells, reducing hair to hairlessness and augmented pigmentation of skin.
When there is too much hormone, it is known as hyperthyroidism, which produces an improved metabolic rate of the cells of the body. They are characterized by confused looking and thin dogs having increased making of red blood cells. This is the most common dysfunction of thyroid. Most of the times, it further contributes to building up of obesity in your dog.

Hypothyroidism is a common problem in dogs that happens due to impaired production or secretion of thyroid hormone. Hypothyroidism shows many symptoms, such as, Lethargy or mental dullness, Hair loss, Weight gain/obesity, Dry hair coat or excessive shedding, Hyperpigmentation of the skin, Cold intolerance, Slow heart rate, High blood cholesterol and Anemia. It is easy to diagnose with blood test to check the level of thyroid hormones. The dog is put on a daily dose of artificial thyroid hormone known as, thyroxine. A hypothyroid dog may have to be a thyroxine for the majority time of its life.
Hyperthyroidism is an endocrinal disease in dogs caused due to thyroid enlargement of functional thyroid, known as edematous hyperplasia. Though it is rare, Hyperthyroidism occurs most commonly in middle or old age digs. Also, there is no specific sex or breed to be affected, some dog breeds have got more cases of the disease than others. Hyperthyroidism has symptoms such as, increased heart rate, increased appetite, weight loss, increased intake of water and urination, nervousness, and increased activity. Some less common symptoms are low appetite, weakness, low activity and heavy breathing. Its diagnosis depends upon clinical signs and blood tests. Hyperthyroidism is medically treated with a drug as Tapazol that curbs the production of thyroid hormone.
Obesity in your dog can turn to be a big problem when it is left untreated. Obesity can bring sicknesses, complexity and diseases, such as, diabetes, cardiovascular pathologies, malfunction of organs that be infiltrated by fat, bone problems to carry any additional weight, heat and exercise intolerance, increasing chances of surgical interventions or deteriorating reproductive system.
