Allergies and skin problems in cats are serious and must be treated immediately. There are a few types of allergies and skin problems in cats that may affect them. Read about them here and also know the possible treatment.

If your cat is having allergies and skin problems, the most apparent cause is fleas. If you are sure that there are no fleas present, it is very likely that allergies are scratching culprit. Unlike humans, in cats the histamines are mainly released in the skin and cause allergic skin reactions.

There are mainly two types of allergies that make the cats itch. They are canine inhalant atopy and food allergy. Both allergies can affect the both types of cats. These allergies occur with the equal amount of frequency in cats of just any breed.

Matted fur

Matted fur is the breeding ground for parasites that further causes inflammatory skin diseases. Do not make attempts to cut it off as the cat may be injured this way. Mats are hard to comb and will be painful. Vet may anesthetize and shave off the cat. Groom it regularly to keep off mats.

Bald patches

Bald patches are often caused by itching and some irritation. The possible culprits are allergies, eczema, fleas and ringworm. At times, it is pure stress. Your vet may prescribe the hormone injection or tranquilizers to control incessant scratching. You also need to take care that you must not get it to yourself. You can work to reduce the transmission by cleaning everything using bleach and washing bedding and cloths in hot water.

Scratching

If your cat is scratching ears and black grits are visible there, it can be earmites. Visit your vet immediately to treat with appropriate ear drops. The ear mites live in ears and can be passed from one affected cat to other. The life of ear mite is completely in the ear, thus you may not be affected with it. Cats generally shake their head when you give them medication. Scratching and discharge coming out from the ears also signifies a bacterial or fungal infection. There can be other possible causes of scratching that include allergies, eczema, fleas, lice or stud tail. The vet must be consulted at once.

Feline Acne

Cats can be affected with acne quite like humans do. Generally, it is only on the chin. It will appear as small black spots. The reasons for feline acne are as complex as it is for humans. At times a food allergy can cause it or when the cat does not clean its chin.
